In 2008 the Hospice spent £2.34 million delivering specialist care to the people of Wigan, Leigh and surrounding areas. Excluding mortgage interest and depreciation, almost 90p in every £1 spent went directly on patient care.
Over £1.5 million of income came from donations, fundraising, shops and other charitable activities. This paid for over 65% of the total cost of delivering care.
Due to the way that charities have to publish their audited accounts, the Hospice income includes the sum of £209,435 which was received in the form of grants spent directly on capital projects; however this figure is not reflected in the expenditure totals.
Over £500,000 was received in the form of legacies. The Hospice relies so much on legacy income to continue its work and we are so grateful to the many people who have supported us in this way. Income from donations, the Hospice shops and our fundraising initiatives amounted to over £1.4 million and the Hospice acknowledges the excellent support that it receives from the Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Primary Care Trust which contributed £982,804 in the year to support Hospice services.
The surplus achieved in 2008 is added to Hospice reserves in order to improve financial stability which is essential especially at times like these when the economic outlook is so uncertain. We are confident that, with the support of the local community, the Hospice will be able to continue offering its essential services to local people for many years to come.
