Wigan and Leigh Hospice is a well-established charity which has been operating since 1983. We provide a wide range of palliative care services to people with advancing life-limiting illnesses of any diagnosis and to those people important to them. The support we offer is tailored to meet individuals’ physical, social, spiritual and emotional needs
Many services provided by Wigan & Leigh Hospice are dependent on the goodwill of our generous volunteers.
Volunteers benefit from help towards bus fare and can apply for a Blue Light Card after their probation period.
About the role
Our charity shops are staffed by a team of committed volunteers who give their time and skills to raise vital funds for the hospice.
We’re looking for Shop Volunteers who are approachable and friendly, with a commitment to delivering excellent customer service. In return, you’ll be offered support and training to do the job, as well as the opportunity to be part of a brilliant team who really make a difference.
A typical day might involve sorting and pricing donated stock, assisting customers with their purchases, serving on the till, as well as ensuring the shop is well presented and welcoming to customers to help to bring in a much income as possible to support the hospice.
We are looking for volunteers who can commit to a minimum of a half day shift per week. The shifts are generally 9.30am – 12.30pm & 12.30pm – 3.30pm Monday – Saturday.
Main Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Assisting and serving customers, providing a high standard of customer service.
- To assist with the moving and displaying of stock, so that the shop looks inviting and is accessible.
- Cash handling and accurate operation of the till, as well as booking in delivery of goods to customers.
- Keeping the shop premises clean and tidy.
- Working positively as part of a team, as well as alongside the Volunteer Shop Coordinator and Retail Staff to support shop operations.
Training and support
- Attend any relevant training and refresher sessions.
- Undertake Mandatory training as relevant to your role.
- Full support will be provided from the retail team.
Personal skills
- Good communication skills
- Enjoy working as part of a team.
- Trustworthy and reliable.
- A reasonable level of physical fitness would be desirable, due to the nature of furniture donations.
