Trustee vacancies (voluntary)

Closing Date: 31st October 2024

About us

Wigan & Leigh Hospice is a well-established charity which has been operating for over 40 years, providing incredible care and support to people who have been diagnosed with a life limiting or terminal illness. Every year we support more than 1200 people through our in-patient unit and in their own homes, providing tailored support to meet their individual needs.  We also provide care to those people most important to our patients.

The services the Hospice offers were deemed Outstanding at the last CQC inspection, and this is reflected in the love and support we receive from our donors, supporters and volunteers.

About the role

As an independent charity, Wigan & Leigh Hospice is led by a board of trustees which holds ultimate responsibility for the governance of the organisation.

A trustee is a person appointed by the charity as a member of the board of trustees to ensure that the charity complies with its governing documents by carrying out the purposes for which it was set up and to ensure compliance with the legislation that relate to the charity’s activities.

The Board offers leadership to the executive team by agreeing the broad strategic aims and direction of the hospice, it offers guidance and support and challenges where necessary. It is responsible for ensuring hospice services are responsive, safe, effective and caring and that the hospice is well-led. The Board ensures that the hospice has the necessary finances to keep operating; that risks are effectively managed and that performance across both clinical and corporate areas are properly reviewed.

The role of a hospice trustee has an ambassadorial element, in terms of representing the hospice or attending hospice events, but we understand that this has to fit in around what may already be busy schedules. The full role profile can be viewed as part of the application process (which is detailed on page 7 of the Recruitment Pack).

About the person

We are looking to appoint trustees with backgrounds and expertise in accounting, PR& comms, health & safety, or digital. We would also consider applicants from any other background with a personal interest in the Hospice.

Applications are welcomed from experienced individuals with an empathy for the work of the Hospice and its service users.

The post requires a Disclosure and Barring Services Check (enhanced DBS).

Time commitment

The Board meets quarterly in the early evening, with Trustees providing more operational support by joining virtual sub-committees. There is also an annual ‘away day’, usually in the autumn, held at a time to suit Board Members. Whilst we value in person meetings with our Trustees, it’s always a pleasure to see them, we understand this is not always possible, and there are opportunities for virtual or hybrid meetings, where required.
