Volunteer Shop Assistant

(13 locations across Wigan and Leigh)

About us

Wigan and Leigh Hospice is a well-established charity which has been operating since 1983. We provide a wide range of palliative care services to people with advancing life-limiting illnesses of any diagnosis and to those people important to them. The support we offer is tailored to meet individuals’ physical, social, spiritual and emotional needs

Many services provided by Wigan & Leigh Hospice are dependent on the goodwill of our generous volunteers.

About the role

As a Volunteer Shop Assistant you will work within an experienced team of volunteers and under the guidance of a lead volunteer (Shop Co-ordinator) with support from the hospice retail team. A typical day will involve unlocking / locking the shop, sorting and pricing donated stock, serving customers on the till, taking telephone calls and ensuring the shop is well presented to optimise income generation. You will chat to the customers and assist with their purchases.

The role requires an approachable, friendly individual who ensures confidentiality and respect whilst being an excellent communicator.

We are looking for volunteers who can commit to a minimum of a half day shift per week. The shifts may vary slightly by shop but are generally 9.30am – 12.30pm & 12.30pm – 3.30pm. Most shops are open Monday – Saturday with some working a half day on Wednesdays and Saturdays. More detailed information on shop locations and opening times can be found at the our shops section of this website.
