With 13 shops and over 400 volunteers there is always lots going on. Please keep an eye on this section of the website for news and any upcoming events. Here is a selection of some of our recent events:
Our January Jumble Sale
We held our most recent Jumble Sale on January 27th which was a huge success.
It raised over £1,000 which will go towards helping people from Wigan and Leigh with a life-limiting illness. We will be arranging another Hospice jumble sale in the Spring so please come back to this page or follow us on Facebook.
In the meantime, if any community groups would like to hold a jumble sale on behalf of the Hospice, please get in touch with the Retail team on 01942 524207 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org and we may be able to provide some stock and promotional material for you.
Early in January we had an anonymous donation to one of our shops of three military dress uniforms and put a post on social media asking for more information.
We had lots of comments and suggestions as to what kind of uniforms they were and where they might have come from.
The Wigan Observer picked up on the appeal and ran a story too.
In one of the jackets was a label with the name ‘Tony McHale’ and in another was a label from Pronto Tailoring in Tyldesley.
Unfortunately we didn’t get to the bottom of this mystery but we’re delighted with the donation.
The uniforms will be sold at Wigan Auction House in March.
Large boots to fill
We always try to find a new home for items donated to our shops so we can raise funds for the Hospice.
However, we struggled to find a buyer for this brand new pair of boots as they are a size 16!
Thankfully a post on social media was shared, commented or liked by many of our supporters and eventually reached the attention of Phil who came in and bought them for £20.
He was thrilled with his purchase and enjoyed his visit to the Hospice. He had never been before but says he will be back.
Lovers of collectable toys were thrilled to discover that we had over 200 troll dolls for sale in our Golborne shop as well as other retro toys including Cabbage Patch dolls.
We’re happy to say that shop reported lots of happy customers coming in and snapping up their childhood favourites.
Golborne Christmas Bonanza
Our Golborne shop volunteers host a very popular annual event in November in the build up to Christmas. All year round they save donations which are suitable as Christmas gifts, such as toiletries sets, fancy goods, decorations and toys. They are all checked and priced and then sold during bonanza week. The shop is decorated in a festive style and the Christmas window display is revealed to the waiting crowd outside.
Our jumble sales happen on Sundays three to four times a year. Most items are sold for just 50p which means the sales are very popular! There is often a tombola or a raffle as well as refreshments on offer. Look out for posters in your local shop or for banners in the Hindley area for the next sale.
Our Shevington shop can always be relied upon to be creative. In 2017 they commemorated World War One with a special themed day in the shop complete with cake and jumble sales.
Our Ashton shop love to dress up and often put on events to mark occasions such as Halloween.
Our Atherton volunteers attended the local carnival in 2018 in the glorious sunshine and made a fantastic £142.30. Well done ladies!
Buy Me Now
Occasionally our shops will host a ‘Buy Me Now’ event where volunteers and others dress up in some of the fantastic outfits we have on offer with the whole ensemble for sale. Hair and beauty professionals volunteer their time to help make our models for the day extra glamorous.
Volunteers out and about
Our Wigan shop team have an annual outing. This time they went to Blackpool where they all enjoyed fish and chips and refreshments on the pier.
