A blanket of care

A blanket of care

10 July, 2025

The letter below was recently sent out to our supporters.

At Wigan & Leigh Hospice, people are at the heart of everything we do. Our patient care is tailored to their individual needs, and to do that, it takes a very special team.

Our wonderful HNS, Lisa, described the hospice as being like a comfort blanket, and I can’t help but agree. Helping our patients and their loved ones to feel safe and comfortable is so important to us, and it just wouldn’t be possible without your support.

Three quarters of the cost of running the hospice is staffing, and we need your continued support to make sure our team can continue to be there when they’re needed most.

Whether it’s a nurse caring for someone at the end of their life, a doctor easing pain, or a receptionist comforting a family as they visit their loved one. There are so many people that make our hospice a place of compassion, dignity and care, and so much more that goes on that is often not seen. From our counsellors to our housekeepers, our gardener to our finance administrators, each and every person in our team plays an important role in ensuring that we are there to provide this essential care the people of this borough.

And then there’s you, our supporters, we couldn’t do what we do without you.

Your kindness and generosity continue to keep our hospice running. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference to the lives of the people we support.

Our care goes beyond medicine. It’s about providing comfort and consideration for each person as an individual. Recently we asked our team what it is about the hospice that is important to them, and so many said what it means to be part of a team that offers such an important role for so many throughout our community. You can read more of these in the enclosed leaflet, and we’d love to hear from you what the hospice means to you.

By completing the patchwork square I have enclosed with this letter, you can help us to make a blanket of care, that will go on display in the hospice reception, reminding us all how many people it takes to deliver hospice care in this borough.

Our team are the heartbeat of our hospice, and it is your donations that keep that heart beating.

We know that times have been challenging over the past number of years but through your support, you have shown us the true meaning of community.

You are part of Team Hospice, and we are so grateful for your support.

Your donations mean that our people continue be here to do what they love; caring for those who need us most, and showing our community that hospices aren’t scary places – Wigan and Leigh Hospice is a place that’s safe, calm and comforting. A place where life is celebrated. And memories are made.

If you are able to consider making a donation today, you’ll be helping us to continue to provide personalised care, compassion and support to those who need us most, ensuring that ours are
there to support yours, should they ever need us.

Thank you, as always, for playing such an important role in Team Hospice.

With my best wishes,

Jo Carby
