Hospice Nurse Specialist

What is a Hospice Nurse Specialist?

A Hospice Nurse Specialist (HNS) is an experienced nurse with additional qualifications in specialist palliative care. They provide expert support to patients with life-limiting illnesses and to those important to them. They work alongside other healthcare processionals – such as GPs and district nurses.

The HNS team works from 8:30am-4:30pm, seven days a week, conducting initial assessments of need and providing regular reviews to ensure care remains appropriate and responsive.

How can they help me?

A Hospice Nurse Specialist (HNS) offers expert, compassionate support to help you and your loved ones to navigate the challenges of living with a life-limiting illness.

Here are some of the ways that a HNS can help:

  • Provide specialist advice and support to help manage complex symptoms.
  • Adjust medications to ensure symptoms are effectively controlled.
  • Offer emotional support during difficult or distressing situations.
  • Use advanced communication skills to discuss the patient’s illness and to help prepare for the future.
  • Support families in adjusting to life with a life-limiting illness.

Working together to give compassionate care

Our team of Hospice Nurse Specialists (HNSs) visit patients in the community and also provide advice and support by telephone.

They regularly meet with GPs in Wigan and Leigh to discuss the needs of palliative patients registered with each practice, ensuring care is coordinated and responsive.

The team also attends daily meetings with other healthcare professionals to ensure that patients have the right support, by the right service, at the right time.

To ensure the highest standards of care, our team meets weekly with other professionals at the hospice – including a Palliative Medicine Consultant – to review and discuss the patients in our care. If you do not wish your care to be discussed in this meeting, please inform your Hospice Nurse Specialist.
