Wigan & Leigh Hospice is introducing a new initiative that will give patients the opportunity to learn about eye donation and record their wishes as part of their end‑of‑life care planning.
The project will ensure that eligible patients can explore eye donation with the support of hospice staff, ask questions, and – if they choose to – have their wishes clearly documented.
Eye donation is a personal choice that can give the gift of sight after death. Even when someone is unable to donate their organs, they may still be able to donate their eyes, with donated corneas having the potential to restore or improve another person’s sight.
As part of the initiative, hospice staff will provide patients and families with clear information about the donation process, including what happens following death and what steps to take if someone wishes to proceed. For patients who leave the hospice, their wishes will also be recorded in their discharge information and care documentation.
Anna Swift, Clinical Director at Wigan & Leigh Hospice, said: “We know that planning for the future is deeply personal, especially for people receiving end‑of‑life care. Our role is to make sure patients have access to clear, compassionate information so they can make the choices that feel right for them.
“For some people, the opportunity to donate their eyes and potentially help restore someone else’s sight is incredibly meaningful. We want to ensure those wishes are heard, recorded and respected, and that patients and families feel fully supported throughout.”
The hospice is encouraging patients who choose eye donation to make sure those important to them are aware of their wishes and know what to do following their death.
This new project forms part of Wigan & Leigh Hospice’s commitment to personalised care and supporting people to make informed choices about their future.
People considering eye donation can find out more through the NHS Blood and Transplant website, which provides information about eligibility, the donation process and how donated corneas can help restore sight.
Wigan & Leigh Hospice provides specialist care and support for people living with life-limiting illnesses, as well as support for their families and those important to them. The hospice is committed to personalised care that reflects each person’s individual needs, wishes and choices.
