Wigan & Leigh Hospice now needs to raise £13,000 every day to keep its services running, an extra £1000 every day.
The cost of providing specialist hospice care increases every year, driven by inflation, higher demand and the need to maintain high-quality services for local people and families. However, funding from the NHS has not kept up – meaning the hospice must now raise more money than ever before to continue delivering its vital care.
A growing gap
Just over one third of the hospice’s income comes from the NHS. The remaining two thirds must be raised through donations, fundraising events, charity shops, the hospice lottery, support from local businesses and gifts in wills.
We rely on our community more than ever
Clare Cooke, Director of Business Development at Wigan & Leigh Hospice, said: “Every year, the cost of delivering hospice care rises, but the statutory funding we receive doesn’t keep up. That means the gap gets bigger – and we rely more than ever on our community to help us bridge that gap.
“We know it isn’t fair to have to keep asking our community for more, but without that support we wouldn’t be able to provide our vital hospice care.
“When you donate to Wigan & Leigh Hospice, your donation is paying for the amazing people who keep our services running 365-days-a-year, supporting local people when they need it most.
“We’re incredibly grateful for everyone who makes a donation, takes part in an event, shops in our charity shops or plays out lottery. Not to mention the amazing army of volunteers who give their time and skills to support the hospice.”
Why your support matters
Money raised by the community helps Wigan & Leigh Hospice to care for hundreds of patients every year, both at the Inpatient Unit and at home. The hospice also provides bereavement and wellbeing services, as well as training and supporting other agencies in the borough, helping them to provide better care when people they are supporting are affected by a life limiting illness.
How you can help
There are many ways to support the hospice, including:
- Donations
- Fundraising
- Shopping in our charity shops
- Playing our lottery
- Leaving a gift in your will
- Corporate partnerships
Clare added:
“Every pound raised stays right here in the borough and helps us care for local people. We couldn’t do what we do without the kindness and generosity of our community.”
