The letter below was recently sent out to our supporters.
I’m Dr Anna Murray and I’m the Medical Director at Wigan & Leigh Hospice.
Every day I get to see first-hand how your support of the hospice makes a difference to the lives of the patients we treat.
I’ve been a doctor at Wigan & Leigh Hospice for more than 15 years now and over that time I’ve worked with thousands of patients and their families. It never ceases to amaze me how generous this community is, continually doing everything they can to make sure our hospice continues to deliver its services.
Without you, we just wouldn’t be able to do what we do, which is why I’m writing to you today to ask you to consider making a donation to help keep our services going.
When I tell people how our care is funded, including the medical students who come to do their training with us, they don’t believe me. They can’t believe that this important medical care is mainly funded through charitable donations. But it’s true.
Ten of the 14 beds we have on the In Patient Unit are completely paid for by charitable donations – that’s the donations we receive thanks to supporters like you. It’s supporters taking part in events, playing our lottery, or shopping in our charity shops. Every penny
we receive is so important and goes directly into providing hospice care for our local community.
With this letter we’ve included Alex’s story. Alex made a commitment to support the hospice in any way he can, after we cared for his mum Angela. I remember Angela from her time with us last year and it’s so lovely to see Alex doing all he can now to raise funds for the hospice. It really means so much to us as a team, to see what a difference we made to this family.
I’ve dedicated my life to palliative medicine because I know what a difference it makes. We have the absolute privilege of supporting patients and those important to them at a crucial time in their lives. We can make tough times that bit easier by providing care that is individually tailored to a patient’s needs – offering comfort to both our patients and those who love them.
But none of what we do is possible without your continued support, which is why I’m asking you to consider making a donation to help us to continue providing vital end-of-life care to the Wigan and Leigh community.
Hospice care is special because it’s only possible thanks to its local community. Without you we just couldn’t do what we do. We’re so lucky to have such wonderful people across our borough, who do so much to keep us going.
