The Galleries Star Treker girl Paul Hammond

20 April 2012

The Galleries Shopping Centre is the main sponsor of the 2012 Wigan & Leigh Hospice Star Trekkers Walk and is urging Women of Wigan to sign up and take part.

The Galleries has launched the "Star Trekkers Galleries Girls" which includes shopping centre staff and staff from shops within the centre who are participating in the walk and unite in supporting the Wigan & Leigh Hospice.

Paula Hammond is another Galleries Girl who has signed up for the Star Trekkers. Paula, the store manager of Ernest Jones was eager to sign up for the Star Trekkers event in memory of her friend Diane Spence.

Paula said "My first experience of Wigan & Leigh Hospice was when my friend Diane who was only 46 developed stomach cancer.  Diane originally went into the hospice to get her cancer medication regulated.  Diane was then admitted to the hospice again in October last year and after courageously fighting the disease for two years she sadly passed away in November.  The hospice volunteers and staff from the receptionists, the cleaners and catering staff were amazing, nothing was ever too much trouble for them and you never felt like they were in the way.  The doctors and nurses gave so much care and attention that along with Diane's family, I feel we should raise as much funds as possible for the hospice.  I am delighted to be taking part in the 2012 Star Trekkers event and would like to take the opportunity to thank the hospice for all the care they provided for my dearest friend Diane."

Julie Dennis, Hospice Fundraising and Events Officer added, "Our need to raise around £4,500 every single day of the year in the current economic climate, demonstrates how valuable the support of the Galleries is to us.  Why not become a 'Galleries Girl' yourself and help us to continue providing the essential specialist care our patients need. Simply visit www.wlh.org.uk/trekkers for full details and to register online or ring 01942 825734.

The Star Trekkers is an annual ladies only event, one of the biggest in the hospice's fund-raising calendar, takes place on Saturday 9 June, starting at 10pm.  There is a choice of a 5 or 8 mile route, both marshalled, starting and finishing at Morrisons in Ince.  The ladies will be entertained by a Wish FM roadshow before the start of the walk while warming up with Zumba moves!

To enter costs £10 per person and every entrant will receive a Star Trekkers T-shirt, refreshments on the night and on completion of the walk, a medal, a bacon sandwich, vegetarian alternative or fruit salad.  Entrants are urged to raise a minimum sponsorship of £50 raising much needed funds for the Hospice.  Wigan & Leigh Hospice provides free care to around 900 new patients every year.  The hospice relies heavily on the generosity of people in the local community and beyond.

Ladies wishing to take part can register at www.wlh.org.uk/trekkers. Further information is also available on The Galleries website.
