Going the extra mile
08 October 2014
LEIGH Community Group has raised over £1,000 for Wigan and Leigh Hospice by walking 15 miles from Derian House to the Hospice.
The team of 13 collected money along the route of a seven and a
half hour walk from the children's hospice in Chorley to Wigan and
Leigh Hospice in Hindley.
In total they raised £2,103 which will be split between the two
charities.
Fundraiser Tonia Bridden said: "At first it was pouring down and
then we got lost and ended up walking 15 miles instead of 11. It
was really much harder than the last one - when you do it in the
car you don't realise how many hills there are!
"We got lost and ended up on the A6 so people couldn't really stop
to make a donation but they pipped their horns so it was nice to
get that support. Some people were stopping in the parking bays and
waiting for us so they could give us a donation.
"It was really nice when we got to the Hospice and there were
balloons and medals and certificates waiting for us."
The group did a similar walk two years ago for Wigan and Leigh
Hospice which started at Hope Hospital and finished at the Hospice.
Over three years the group has raised over £20,000 for charity.
