Become a Volunteer

Volunteering is a rewarding way to spend your spare time, a great way to meet people and an opportunity to develop new skills.

We are a local charity and rely on the support of our community to ensure we can deliver all of our services free of charge to those who need them.

The starting point is to know the hospice values; Compassion, Accessibility, Respect, Excellence. If you feel you possess the qualities that underpin the hospice values then we would like to hear from you!

Training in your role

All volunteers receive an induction and undertake some mandatory training. You will then receive role-specific training to support you in your volunteering role.

Most roles require at least one commitment to a shift once a week which is usually for 3 to 4 hours. If you are unsure please speak to the team and we can see if we have any volunteering opportunities to suit your availability.

Volunteering roles available

We have a wide variety of roles available, both in the hospice building and in the community, including:

  • Working in one of our 10 shops across the Borough
  • Supporting patients on our Inpatient Unit, for example, by making them drinks
  • Hospice In Your Home companionship service – regularly visiting a hospice patient in their own home
  • Bereavement support
  • Supporting our fundraising team
  • Working on the hospice reception
  • Assisting with administration
  • General maintenance work
  • Gardening
  • Helping in the kitchen

See the current list of volunteering roles available.

Apply to become a volunteer

When you decide you'd like to become a volunteer we’ll ask you to fill in an application form and attend an informal interview so you can find out a bit more about the role.

For certain roles we need to carry out a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check before you can begin to volunteer with us and all roles will require reference checks.

If you would like further information about volunteering at the hospice or would like to apply, contact the HR team by email at: v@wlh.org.uk or telephone 01942 525566.
