The education service delivered by the hospice was awarded recurrent funding to secure its future, earlier this year.
Formerly known as ‘Hospice in your Care Home’ the newly named ‘Practice Development Team’ will introduce the new initiative – ‘Wigan Borough Palliative and End of Life Care Learning Hub’ when it officially launches on October 5th.
Additional staff have been recruited to the team, which means the palliative and end of life care training and support, previously offered to nursing and residential homes – will be available free of charge to all health and social care professionals working across the Borough.
The central learning hub will be based at the hospice in Kildare Street, Hindley, and will provide a wide variety of education and training opportunities to the workforce in hospital and community care settings. This includes a dedicated clinical skills room, and training spaces, where staff can learn about the fundamental components of good palliative and end of life care.
Whilst the Practice Development Team will lead on many education sessions, other experienced practitioners working in Wigan including GPs, District Nurses and hospital staff, will contribute to the delivery.
Over the coming months, satellite hubs will be developed across Wigan, including the first taking place in Standish and Pemberton on October 10th and 11th. These will offer staff alternative venues, to access palliative and end of life care education and support.
Debbie Jones, Practice Development Lead for the hub, said: “The hub will provide a visible, central location, for all this important education and training taking place in the Borough to be coordinated under one umbrella, ensuring less repetition and a clearer plan to enable staff from multiple settings to have their learning needs met by skilled, experienced palliative and end of life care educators.”
