Lighting up our lives

14 December 2011

Every year the Wigan & Leigh Hospice Light for a Life Appeal provides a lovely way for us all to ‘say thank you’ to people important to us and people who have been important or influential in our lives.

The scheme runs until the 12th Night after Christmas and dedications continue to be made up to then. As well as a light on the tree, all dedications are entered into a 'Book of Dedications' which will be on display in the Hospice Chapel when printed. It will join the others since the scheme began in 1997.

The switch-on ceremony was held on Tuesday 6th December when hundreds of people attended an emotive switch on ceremony in the grounds of the Hospice in Hindley.

A highlight of the Ceremony is always the singing of the children from the adjacent St Peters' Junior School, which was again a wonderful, uplifting experience. This year it was further enhanced by the solo verses of 6 year old Jessica Farrar who stunned and enthralled the crowd with her confident and emotional singing.

The Wigan & Leigh Hospice Light for a Life Appeal goes from strength to strength every year with ever more varied dedications being made. One such was an 18 year old young lady who dedicated a light to her boyfriend. He has recently returned from the Libyan conflict and is expecting to go for his next assignment to Afghanistan. She wanted to express her love for him by dedicating a light on the tree and an entry into the book.

If you have not already done so, you can still make dedications up to the 12th night after Christmas, either online at www.wlh.org.uk or by picking up at leaflet at any Hospice shop, or the Hospice itself.
