St Pauls School sponsored walk

07 April 2011

For several years, St Paul’s School, Westleigh, like many other local schools, have sold ‘cuddly toys’ for Wigan & Leigh Hospice.

However this Easter, they, in common with some other schools, decided to do a sponsored walk instead.Over 170 pupils aged from 5yrs to 11yrs walked several laps of their playing field.

St Paul's School

It was a brilliant success, raising a terrific six hundred and ten pounds for the Hospice.

Hospice Community Fundraiser Maxine Armstrong said, "This was a fabulous day, with the Primary age group doing 4 laps in the morning and the Juniors 10 laps in the afternoon."

Inevitably, there were some 'hares' who started off at a cracking pace. However they were soon caught by the 'pack' and everyone finished the course, including one young girl with Asthma who took rests, but would not stop until she had completed the walk!

Head, Jill Hankinson said, "This is the first time we have done a sponsored walk. All the children thoroughly enjoyed it and we're delighted to support the Hospice. They provide a highly valuable service to the whole local community."

"Maxine added, "We have close links with all the schools in the Borough, and lots of children's organisations, many of whom support us in a variety of ways. These sorts of activities are a great way to give children theirto the Hospice and we endeavour to educate them that it is not a frightening place."

It's a fact that most adults have many misconceptions about Hospices and the nature and type of care they provide. The Hospice is committed to educating young people before they form the same erroneous perceptions.Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Scouts, Youth Groups and Schools are just some of the many groups, young and old, that regularly visit the Hospice for a tour. The reality, not the myths are there for all to see.

Whatever age or background, if you as an individual, or any group to which you belong, would like to visit the Hospice to discover the truth, simply ring the Hospice during office hours on 01942 525566.
