And off they go...

Despite unpleasant weather forecasts, the day was good, the atmosphere brilliant and the support for the Hospice outstanding.

The fun began in Manchester and continued all along the 62 mile route.  Some were in fancy dress taking it nice and easy, others were going at a blistering pace to set a personal record time. However, one common connection was obvious, most were riding in memory of a loved one and to raise vital funding for the Hospice.  At the finish many showed their emotion and delight as the realisation of completing a mammoth 62 mile bike journey registered in their minds.

Medal collection

At the Medal Collection point many riding for other charities looked on enviously as Volunteers and Hospice staff proudly awarded each of our riders with a medallion to show our appreciation and support. How proud we are of you all.

Back up support

Over 200 of the Hospice riders took advantage of the Hospice back up support, this included transportation for Riders and Bikes to the start at Hilti Car Park in Manchester, then the journey back from Blackpool to the Investment centre in Wigan.  Three Hospice Ambulance vehicles provided a full back-up service and tracked the 62 Mile course from start to finish dealing with over 40 situations such as puncture repairs, replacement parts, personal transport for riders and even replacement bikes.  Two pit stops in Aspull and Preston providing free drinks and of course Wigan pies ensured our riders had everything they needed to make it to the finish line. All designed to make Hospice supporters secure in the knowledge that they were not alone.

Special thanks

We would like to give a special mention to our sponsors:

  • Asda, Ellseys Vinegar.BarclaysEldercare, Wigan Investment Centre, Hilti Manchester, The Space Centre, Aspull Village Club, Trafalgar Coaches, and Warrington Transport.

Your contributions have ensured the whole event has been a great success. Thank you all so much.

Delighted CEO

Hospice Chief Executive Alan Baron, who was dishing out drinks and sandwiches at one of the two Hospice 'refreshment' stops said, "What an outstanding day.  We endeavour to provide the best possible service, not only to our patients and families, but to those who support us."

Alan concluded, "Not only was it a terrific atmosphere throughout, but we are looking forward to being able to use the sponsorship money that will be raised for the specialist care our patients need.  Last year the ride raised over £50,000!  So please support those who generously gave up their Sunday, not to mention all the many hours and days of training they undertook for us.  We know how much some of our riders endured to help others.  Thank you. "

Praise for Hospice riders, volunteers & sponsors

Fundraising Manager Danny Hall also had plenty of praise for the Riders Volunteers & Sponsors - he added, " We are so proud of all our 350 Riders, what a fantastic turn out for the Hospice. The Fundraising Team did an outstanding job, however, we would also like to thank all the amazing Volunteers and our Sponsors who have helped ensure that the organisation both building up to the event and on the day itself went like clockwork. Without them it simply wouldn't have been possible. Thank you all so much."
