New hospice website connects more closely with local people and businesses

04 April 2012

Wigan & Leigh Hospice has just unveiled its new website, designed to reach out and engage more strongly with the local community.

Times move on, and so does the way in which people and organisations communicate. So, when Wigan & Leigh Hospice decided to commission a new website, a key part of the brief was for it to communicate clearly, in an up-to-date way.

"It's understandable that some misconceptions about hospices still exist," says Danny Hall, fundraising manager at Wigan & Leigh Hospice. "We wanted to show the hospice as it really is - bright, welcoming; a place that's not just about dying."

To help do this, the website features around a dozen short videos, each introducing an aspect of the hospice's services - and narrated by the person responsible for providing that service. Although the website still contains text for people to read about the hospice, it was felt that video would offer a more accurate representation of what the hospice does, as well as give people a more immediate connection with the hospice and with the people who provide its services.

Since a growing number of people use social media - such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn - the new website integrates with these and allows people to follow, like or 'friend' the hospice with ease.

"We've made it easier for people to do everything," says Hall, "from signing up for events to donating online. Connecting with people via social media is so important - the hospice is a real core part of the local community and we want to make it as easy as possible for people, schools and companies to get to know us, support us and help us."

The website and videos were created by northwest company Labrow Marketing - which had impressed the hospice with its website work for St Ann's Hospice. "I don't think we could have worked with anyone better," commented Hall, "from one end of the project to the other, we got great advice and help. The finished website is one which we believe does the tough job of communicating what a hospice does most clearly."
