Steve Brodrick is new Facilities Manager

01 September 2013

Steve Brodrick is a recent appointment to the Wigan & Leigh hospice staff as Facilities Manager. His background is in Engineering, Health and Safety and Maintenance. He originally came to the Hospice in 2011 after reading a press article about the need for volunteer drivers at the hospice.

Steve says, "I had been made redundant and read in the local press that the hospice was looking for volunteers.  Having already been a volunteer at some Hospice fundraising events, but I wanted to help on a more regular basis.  I became a volunteer driver on a hospice van, collecting and delivering goods.  In 2012 a volunteer role became available for risk assessment and electrical testing.  As this was my background, I offered to help.  It included not only the Hospice, but the 12 hospice shops around the borough."

"Earlier this year, when the staff position of Hospice General Facilities Manager was advertised, I applied for the post and after due process, was successful.  It's totally different to anywhere I have worked before."

The wide-ranging role varies from sourcing products, engaging and supervising contractors, to changing a light bulb, fixing a bed or ordering plants for the gardens.

I get so much satisfaction; because every department is geared to putting patient care foremost.  The Hospice is a living place and no two days are the same.

Ensuring that everything at the hospice is to the highest standard and working properly is essential to the proper running of the organisation.  Whatever is required, our patients and their families deserve the best and we do our best to ensure their visit or stay is not affected by practical or equipment problems."

Steve concludes, "The Hospice is a 'living place'. I really enjoy coming to work every day.  It's a wonderful place to work or to volunteer."

I began as a volunteer and there are over 700 people donating their time and talents in support of Wigan & Leigh hospice.  If you have a little spare time, why don't you enquire about ways you can help us?
