400 extra tickets released for Wigan water slide

29 July 2014

A 110m water slide in Wigan town centre will run for a second day, allowing an extra 400 tickets to be released following huge demand from around the North West.

The Ticket to Slide event was originally planned to run for one day, Saturday 16th August, but organisers Wigan and Leigh Hospice and Wigan Council have made the decision to open the slide for an extra day, Sunday 17th August.

To date nearly 700 tickets have sold and the hospice has been inundated with calls for the event which will see Standishgate turned into a two lane, giant water slide.

Maxine Armstrong, Fundraising and Lottery Manager at the Hospice, said:

"We have been overwhelmed by the demand and sold more than 300 tickets on the first day. We even had one man who heard about the slide call us for tickets while he was on holiday in Thailand.
"It's proven so popular we don't want to disappoint anyone so we've decided to run the slide over the whole weekend and give over 1,000 people the chance to take part."

Cllr Molyneux, deputy leader at Wigan Council, said:
"We want to thank the people of Wigan Borough for getting behind this charity event as the funds raised will make such a difference to so many people and their families who rely on the services provided by Wigan and Leigh Hospice. When we realised demand was so high for tickets for the water slide we were keen to help make more available to allow more people to take part and to help boost the amount raised for the hospice."

The slide will be constructed on the morning of Saturday 16th August and the hospice is asking for volunteers to help build it. There will be two lanes, made up of more than 300 bales of hay kindly donated by local farmers and this will be covered by plastic sheeting and rubber matting. It will be covered by a slippery material and local firefighters will be providing the water.

The slide will start outside the Grand Arcade entrance and will finish at Wilkinson where there will be a 20m stopping zone.

Tickets are available priced at £10 on a first come, first served basis from www.wlh.org.uk/events/ticket-to-slide

Further information and tickets are also available from the fundraising team at the Hospice on 01942 524204 (open between 9am and 4pm Monday - Friday).
