A challenging year ahead

30 December 2014

A MUM from Hindley Green is aiming to complete 12 challenges in 12 months to raise funds for Wigan and Leigh Hospice.

Year of challenges

Tracy Symons, 37, will start her year of fundraising with a 10K run in New York on New Year's Day and finish with a 30K bike ride in Australia on New Year's Eve 2015.

Tracy, an accounts manager for steel works Collins Reinforcements in Ince, is fundraising in memory of her father-in-law Ray Symons; her uncle Harold Gregory and schoolfriend Susan Belshaw who were all cared for by the Hospice.

She said: "I want to do at least 12 challenges throughout the year. I'm starting on the 1st January with a 10K in Central Park in New York where I'll be running in the freezing cold probably in huge snow drifts and I'll be finishing in the blistering heat of summer in Australia. I'm going to be doing loads of other challenges in between and I'm not going to be doing the same challenge twice - I want to do something different every time - and get other people involved too."

Tracy will be joined in her New York running challenge by husband Lee while her daughters Chloe, 15, and Bethany, 13, will cycle the 10K.

Chloe will also join Tracy in Survival of the Fittest, a 10K obstacle course in Manchester.

So far, Tracy has the following 12 challenges planned:
• January - 10K in Central Park, New York
• February - Ladies' Night at home with friends
• May - Manchester Electric Run, a 5K run or walk done at nighttime
• May - the Manchester 10K
• June - Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in Liverpool
• July - Manchester Color Run
• September - Raffle and a 'Pink Day' at work
• October - Marbury Park zombie run in Cheshire
• November - Survival of the Fittest
• December - 30K bike ride in Australia
• TBC - Body Combat in fancy dress at Leigh Sports Village
• TBC - Race for Life

Hospice Chief Executive, Alan Baron, said: "Tracy has set herself an extraordinary challenge to complete so many fundraising activities for the Hospice in just a year.
"It will be a remarkable achievement and all of the money raised will go towards supporting local people with a life-limiting illness and their families.
"On behalf of everyone at the Hospice I would like to wish her the very best of luck, particularly for her first challenge in New York against those snow drifts!"
