Atherton swimmer takes the plunge for Hospice appeal

24 August 2015

Seventy-year-old Philip Litherland, from Atherton, has raised over £400 for Wigan and Leigh Hospice after swimming a mile in Lake Windermere.

Philip took to the Lake for the Great North Swim in June for the second year running and beat his previous time, crossing the finish line in just over 56 minutes.

Philip has decided to donate his sponsorship money to the Hospice's Counting on Care appeal, which is currently raising £60,000 to support the cost of modernising the 14-bed Inpatient Unit and making it dementia-friendly.

Philip said: "I really enjoyed swimming the Great North Swim again and actually found it slightly easier this year as the water was a bit warmer. I'm now trying to encourage my family to join me next year."
