STUDENTS and staff from Leigh Sixth Form Centre are working together to raise funds for Wigan & Leigh Hospice by taking on a coast-to-coast challenge.

College takes on coast to coast

Five staff will ride the 140-mile route from Whitehaven in Cumbria to Sunderland and eight students are organising the entire trip.

The eight students are planning the trip, organising the accommodation, booking transport and marketing the challenge as part of their Level 3 Diploma in sport.

All funds raised will be donated towards the Hospice's Counting on Care appeal to modernise the Inpatient Unit and make it dementia-friendly.

Lecturer Carl Wild is one of those who will be completing the bike ride on April 24th and 25th.

"It all started as an exercise to develop work-related skills such as organising and planning," he said. "We thought we should get the staff involved as well and help the local community. We wanted to do something we don't normally do so we went for a cycling challenge.
"We wanted to do it for something local and for a charity which helps people in both Wigan and Leigh. We're also aware of the excellent work the Hospice does and we wanted to help with the new appeal for the Inpatient Unit."

The team will be cycling 70 miles a day and staying over for two nights in B&Bs along the way.

The students have done all the planning, set up a Just Giving page and are looking for local companies to help out with transport. They currently need a medium-sized van which can fit five bikes and a people carrier. Please contact Carl Wild at Leigh Sixth Form Centre by email: or by phone 01942 761428 if you can help.
