A 14-STRONG team of work colleagues from an Astley manufacturing business are taking on the Manchester to Blackpool bike ride for the Hospice.

Team of 14 take on bike ride

The group from MDF moulding manufacturer W. Howard Limited based on Lower Green Lane will cycle 63 miles from the city to the South Shore in a bid to raise at least £1,400 for the Hospice.

Staff at the business, which is the largest UK manufacturer of MDF products, voted to make Wigan and Leigh Hospice their Charity of the Year and since then have been getting involved in as many fundraising activities as they can.

Captain of the bike ride team, Paul Southern, is a keen cyclist who regularly cycles to work from his home in Atherton. "I'm looking forward to it because it'll be an achievement, it's for charity and because I want to prove that I can still manage an endurance race," he said.

Nick Woods said: "I've done the bike ride twice before in 2010 and 2011. This time everyone at work was getting involved so I wanted to take part too, it would be good if we all started together and finished together as a team."

Phil Barnard said: "I'm reasonably nervous because it is a long way but I've started doing short training sessions which I need to build on.
"The staff wanted their Charity of the Year to be the Hospice and it's a very worthwhile cause so I hope we can raise lots of money!"

W. Howard Limited has already raised £74 by holding an Easter Raffle for the Hospice and has bought a table for the Hospice Heritage Ball on May 16th which will be raffled off among staff.
