Walking in Remembrance

20 April 2015

A MUM from Leigh will be remembering her husband when she takes part in Wigan and Leigh Hospice’s Walk of Memories.

Walking in Remembrance

Lynn Nicholls, 43, lost her husband John on March 1st to stomach cancer after getting married just weeks before.

She will walk 5K around Pennington Flash Country Park to raise funds for the Hospice in remembrance of John who was just 45 years old.

Lynn said: "We'd only been married for 2 days when we went to the Hospice for a look around so we could find out how it could help John when the time came. A few days afterwards he felt unwell and had to go into hospital. We talked about moving him to the Hospice but in the end he stayed in hospital until he died.
"One of my friends posted the Walk of Memories on Facebook and I've always walked everywhere so even though I've never done anything like this before I decided to do it and set up a Just Giving page."

Within a short time Lynn met her initial £100 sponsorship target and has now set her sights on raising £300 after being overwhelmed with support.

The couple first met and dated when Lynn was 18 and John was 20-years-old for around a year but both went on to meet other people and have families.

Their children went to the same junior and senior schools and three and a half years ago Lynn and John rekindled their romance. They got married after just three months' planning at the Greyhound Hotel in Leigh on January 31st.

Lynn said: "John was very well-known - there were over 500 people at his funeral - because he was very well-liked. Even if he didn't know someone he would get talking to them and he knew a lot of people from when he worked at Reubens nightclub.
"When I'm having a bad day I think about how John was so brave and how he did everything he set out to. If he can do that I know I can do the walk."

Lynn will be walking with seven friends and family members.

The Walk of Memories takes place on Sunday, May 3rd, at Pennington Flash Country Park in Leigh.

Walkers will have a choice of a 10 or 5K walk and will finish by placing a message on the Memories Tree. After the event walkers will be able to nenjoy a range of refreshments, fairground rides, music and more.
