Hospice patient renews vows

11 July 2016

Hospice patient, Gareth Roscoe (59) from Standish, renewed his wedding vows with wife Nicola Roscoe (51) on their eighteenth wedding anniversary (27 June).

The couple renewed their vows in the chapel at Wigan Hospital and afterwards celebrated the occasion in the garden room at Wigan and Leigh Hospice with Nicola's parents, Robert and Margaret Briggs, and their good friend, Jackie Wood.

Gareth was diagnosed three years ago with Multiple Myeloma, a form of bone marrow cancer, and was referred to Wigan and Leigh Hospice.

Over the years, Gareth has benefitted from many services provided by the Hospice and now even has a 'Hospice in your Home' volunteer who visits him once a week for companionship when his wife is at work.

Gareth said: "It's such a fabulous service and they have paired me with a volunteer who I really get along with and have things in common with. My wife and I have also benefitted from the Hospice's complementary therapy, counselling and even cognitive behavioural therapy.

"I even have a specialist hospice nurse, Lisa, who visits me at home and she is our first port of call for anything we need. She is a tower of strength for us both and can't do enough for us.

"I hope to go in to the Hospice when the time comes as I think it's too much pressure for Nicola dealing with her own grief as well as looking after me and any visitors. Plus, I want our house to be full of happy memories for her in the future."

The couple, who have been together for 20 years, say that it truly was love at first sight.

Nicola said: "We wanted to come to Wigan and Leigh Hospice to celebrate renewing our wedding vows as it is an absolutely fabulous place. We had always planned to renew own vows on our twentieth wedding anniversary and we thought about doing it at Gretna Green in Scotland but, sadly, Gareth's health deteriorated and so we decided to bring it forward and do it close to home. It's been a wonderful day and has meant so much to us both."

Dr Alan Baron, Chief Executive of Wigan and Leigh Hospice, said: "We were delighted that Gareth and Nicola chose to come to the Hospice to celebrate renewing their wedding vows. We work hard to make sure that our patients and their loved ones always feel welcome and at home here and I'm so pleased that they decided to come to the Hospice to celebrate such a happy occasion."
