Hospice announces speaker line-up for 2017 conference

ALL of the speakers for Wigan and Leigh Hospice’s conference ‘Confused about Confusion in Palliative Care?’ can now be confirmed.


• Dr Anna Fryer, Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist at Arrowe Park Hospital
• Steve Jones, Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader at Edge Hill University
• Dr Mark Allington, Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist at Aintree University Hospital, Liverpool
• Tony Husband, Award-Winning Cartoonist and Author
• The conference will be chaired by Tony Bonser, Trustee of the National Council for Palliative Care and of St Catherine's Hospice, Preston.
The conference on the challenging behaviours associated with cognitive impairment will takes place at Leigh Sports Village on Wednesday, February 8th, 2017.

'Confused about Confusion in Palliative Care?' will explore the management and care of palliative patients who experience more complex symptoms and challenging behaviours due to conditions such as delirium, dementia and brain tumours.

Dr Fryer will speak about managing mental symptoms at the end of life while Steve Jones will explore the link between the Mental Capacity Act and the Deprivation of Liberty safeguards.

Dr Allington will speak about delirium in palliative care.

Tony Husband will share his personal experience of his father's changing behaviour due to dementia. Following his father's death, Tony wrote a book called 'Take Care, Son: The Story of my Dad and his Dementia', which was published in 2014.

During the conference, in-depth workshops will explore issues such as patient management case studies, and dementia care in a day hospice environment.

The conference will be beneficial for professionals working in specialist palliative care, mental health settings and health and social care services including hospital staff, GPs, doctors, nurses, social workers and counsellors.
