Bakkavor Hitchen gives to hospice appeal

Employees at Bakkavor Hitchen Foods chose the hospice as their Workplace Charity of the Year 2016. Through a number of fundraising initiatives the fresh prepared foods company successfully raised £5,254.58 to go the hospice's appeal to raise at least £50,000 towards the cost of modernising the 20-year-old Inpatient Unit (IPU) in Hindley. The donation was made in memory of their work colleague, Christine Shirley, who sadly passed away at the hospice in December 2016.

Amanda Irvine, Health and Safety Advisor at Bakkavor Hitchen Foods, said: "Every year we do something for a particular charity and our employees voted for the hospice. To raise funds we've sold cakes, organised raffles and hosted a picnic and fun day in Mesnes Park.

"We're absolutely made up with how much we've raised - it's a fantastic amount and credit has to go to all our staff for all of their effort and support.

Building work started in January and will take approximately eight months to refurbish all 16 bedrooms, toilets and bathrooms and the IPU corridor. All patient bedrooms will get new heating, patio doors, lighting, decor and furnishings and an extension will be built to create more storage, a bariatric bedroom and a Nurses' Reception. Dementia-friendly principles, including colour-coding and new signage, will be used throughout the IPU which will make it easier for all patients and visitors to find their way.

Maxine Armstrong, Fundraising Manager at the Hospice, said: "This is a huge boost for our Counting on Care appeal and we are so grateful to the employees at Bakkavor Hitchen Foods for nominating the hospice as their charity for 2016.
"We look after over 1,000 people from Wigan and Leigh with a life-limiting illness every year and many of these are cared for on our IPU. These funds will help us to make the IPU a more comfortable and therapeutic place for all of our patients and visitors."
