Father and son team up in memory

Jim Braithwaite, 62, and David Braithwaite, 32, have signed up for the charity's annual event on Sunday, July 9th in memory of Jim's wife and David's mum, Anne Braithwaite.

Anne was admitted to the hospice on November 25th 2016 a few months after being diagnosed with stomach and liver cancer. Anne, a former nurse, sadly passed away aged 60 on January 11th.

Jim said: "Anne was 60 but she looked about 40 and she was so bright - she was a member of MENSA- she was amazing. She spent a lot of time making sure we were OK when it should have been the other way around.
"She was a part-time nurse at Bedford Care Home and she'd been a nurse for 40 years, she'd even thought about working in a hospice, so when it was suggested she come to the hospice she was fine. I came in a few hours after she was admitted and she had a room with a nice view and could watch the squirrels and the birds, which she liked, and the staff were lovely."

It was while visiting the hospice that Jim saw a poster advertising the 63-mile ride and was inspired to sign up to fundraise in Anne's memory as the couple regularly enjoyed bike-riding.

"We used to cycle together three times a week and we used to do lot of walking too," said Jim. "A 60-mile ride is a bit of a stretch for me - I've not done 60 miles for a good while - but I do go out cycling with a group three times a week. I cycled from Astley to Haydock recently which was about 20 miles and from home to Knowsley to see a friend which is about 40 miles so I just need to get a few more miles in."

When Jim signed up for the bike ride son David jumped at the chance to join him and Jim fixed up a road bike for his son.

David said: "I used to do a lot of mountain biking but not so much any more but mum liked riding and dad likes it too. When he saw this ride advertised at the hospice and signed up I wanted to do it with him for everything the hospice did and for my mum. I think it's quite fitting to do a bike ride and I think she'd be proud of us."

Jim has already raised funds for the hospice by taking part in a sky dive with his daughter Kathryn and is keen to sign up to one organised by the hospice next year.

To sign up for the bike ride contact the fundraising team at the hospice or sign up online before the deadline date of June 30th: /events/manchester-to-blackpool-bike-ride
