A MEMBER of staff at Wigan and Leigh Hospice has vowed to run her first half marathon to raise funds for the charity.

Hospice educator sets herself half marathon challenge

Sarah Owens, Palliative Care Education Lead, will run the Wigan Half Marathon on Sunday, March 19th after starting to run regularly in August 2016.

Sarah was introduced to running by a friend who suggested it would complement the high intensity workouts she was doing as part of the CrossFit fitness regime.

She said: "I didn't fall in love with running straight away but I saw it as a challenge and the more times I did it I began to see the benefits and what it was doing to enhance my CrossFit training and vice versa.

"I see the half marathon as another challenge and a perfect opportunity to raise some funds for the Hospice, which has a very special place in my heart. When I started running I soon got up to 3 or 4 miles so it seemed a waste of time to do a 5 or 10K. I'm pretty nervous now and worry I'll not be able to do it but I'm also kind of looking forward to it. I don't have a time in mind - I just want to make it around the course alive!"

Sarah has always been interested in fitness and has lost weight over a number of years and then put it back on. Turning 40 in May gave her the motivation to lead a healthier lifestyle for the longer term.

"When I turned 40 I thought that this had to change for me and for my son," she said. "I've now lost 3 and a half stones since May and over 8 stones in total from when I was at my heaviest. I've never felt as physically well as I do now.

"For anyone thinking of starting running I would tell them to set yourself goals and don't be surprised if, some days you go out and when you put one foot in front of another, it feels like the hardest thing in the world. Your mind will give up before your body does."

Sarah is hoping to raise £200 for the hospice. To sponsor Sarah visit: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/sarah-owens9
