Mike’s Story

Celebrating Volunteers' Week with Mike

To celebrate volunteer’s week, we would like to introduce you to some of our amazing volunteers!

Today’s volunteer is Mike Seddon, who has been involved with Wigan & Leigh Hospice for over 20 years!

Mike started to volunteer for the Hospice back in 1999 in our Day Hospice, at the time he was looking to gain some skills to enable to get him back into the workplace. He then applied for a job in the Day Centre and was successful. When our Day Hospice unfortunately closed, Mike moved to work on our Inpatient Unit and continues to volunteer after he retired in 2022.

Mike says;

“After I retired, my life was busy, but I found that I still had some spare time, and I knew that I wished to use that to continue to support the Hospice. I love working with the staff and other volunteers as well as being able to interact with patients and their families. Although there are many sad occasions, the good times outweigh the bad.

I would encourage anyone that has spare time to volunteer, it is great to put on your CV and it is so rewarding, the atmosphere is amazing, and I have met some incredible people some of whom have become good friends.

The staff work so hard to support the patients and their families and I love being a part of the Wigan & Leigh Hospice team.”

Thank you to Mike and to all our volunteers for the time and support that they give to Wigan & Leigh Hospice.
