DEDICATED health and social care professionals from across Wigan Borough will be recognised for their commitment to palliative and end of life care at a ceremony on Friday, October 7th.
Organised by the Practice Development Team at the Wigan Borough Palliative and End of Life Care Learning Hub* based at charity Wigan and Leigh Hospice a total of 14 awards will be handed out at the ceremony taking place at Leigh Sports Village.
The annual event, which traditionally recognises the work of care settings such as residential and nursing homes, has been extended for the first time in the six years it has been running so that all health and social care professionals in Wigan can be nominated and recognised for their contributions.
Commitment
The ceremony aims to recognise the commitment and passion amongst health and social care professionals to improve palliative and end-of-life care for their patients, residents and service users.
Amongst those nominated are care homes, GPs, District Nurses, domiciliary carers and hospital workers.
Debbie Jones, Practice Development Team Lead at the hub, said: “We are delighted to be able to hold our annual awards ceremony face to face once again and recognise the excellent work taking place across our Borough in the field of palliative and end of life care.
“The pandemic highlighted just how important education and training in palliative and end of life care is. Some health and social care professionals were caring for dying people for the very first time; all health and social care professionals faced unique challenges.
“The ceremony will recognise these local heroes who go that extra mile and strive to develop their knowledge and skills so that they can provide the very best care for some of the most vulnerable people in our community.”

Learning Hub
Formerly known as the ‘Hospice in your Care Home Awards’ the name of the event is now the ‘Wigan Borough Palliative and End of Life Care Learning Hub Awards’ as the Practice Development Team now leads on this new initiative which will officially launch at the hospice on Wednesday, October 5th.
The development of the hub means that training and education in palliative and end of life care will be extended from being offered primarily to nursing and residential homes to all health and social care professionals across the Borough, including GPs, hospital staff, care agencies, homeless services, extra care and supported living and more.
The team currently provides education and training free of charge for almost 100 care settings in the Borough, with dedicated face to face sessions at the hospice hub, and additional virtual sessions available.
