PEOPLE supporting someone with palliative care needs or who is at the end of their life are being offered support and advice free of charge.

Drop-in sessions are being held every month in Standish and Pemberton where a friendly team will be available to answer questions. They can also discuss any learning needs carers may have around palliative and end of life care.

During the drop-in sessions the team from the Wigan Borough Palliative and End of Life Care Learning Hub will also give short presentations. Topics will include common symptoms at end of life, spirituality, dementia and pain, and loss, grief and bereavement.

The sessions are the first time that the team behind the hub – the ‘Practice Development Team’ at Wigan and Leigh Hospice – have offered training and support to informal carers, alongside health and social care professionals. The team, formerly known as Hospice in your Care Home, have been delivering free education and training to staff in Wigan, since 2015.

Debbie Jones, Hub Lead, said: “We are so pleased to offer dedicated education for the first time to members of the public who are caring for a loved one. It is crucial to the support of those individuals whose caring role may be overlooked as they are a family member or friend of someone with a life limiting illness.

“The drop-in sessions are a welcoming safe place for anyone who has any questions or feels they have more to learn about caring for someone with palliative or end of life needs. Please do come and see us.”
