Young fundraiser wins Blue Peter badge after supporting Wigan & Leigh Hospice

Six-year-old April has been raising money for charities including Wigan & Leigh Hospice since she was four and has recently been awarded with a Blue Peter badge for her amazing efforts. Here is her story, told by Mum, Laura.

Memories of the Hospice

“Wigan & Leigh Hospice cared for my Grandma (April’s Great Grandma) in August 2019. She stayed in the Inpatient Unit at the hospice for 4 weeks. After she was discharged and before she passed away, some of the staff visited her at home and sometimes stayed with her overnight to give our family some rest.

The staff were always so lovely to us when we visited the Inpatient Unit. April used to walk up and down the corridors saying hello to everyone. Even though April was very small when we were visiting the hospice, she had a very close relationship with her Great Grandma and still talks about her often.”

Fundraising for the Hospice

“April wanted to know how she could help people who looked after her Great Grandma, and after I saw a social media post about a star jumps challenge, she jumped at the chance to fundraise and never looked back! In February 2024, April completed 40 star jumps every day to raise money for the Hospice. She also completed 22 swimming lengths to raise money for Bowel Cancer Research and completed Pretty Muddy Kids for Breast Cancer Research.

April was awarded with a Blue Peter badge for her incredible fundraising and kindness in January 2025. She was so shocked and had no idea that her application for the award had been accepted! She was awarded with the badge in a school assembly and is so proud of it that she wears it day and night.

In total, April has raised over £600 for Wigan & Leigh Hospice. She keeps asking to do another challenge for the Hospice and is currently thinking about what she would like to do next. Her next challenges are a sponsored swim, a neon walk and Pretty Muddy for different charities but would love to do something for the Hospice after these are complete.”

We cannot thank April enough for her support and brilliant fundraising efforts for the hospice and can’t wait to see what she gets up to next!
